First 24 Hours
- Bleeding - Bite on gauze pads for 30-60 minutes after surgery. Some oozing is normal for 24 hours. If heavy bleeding persists, bite on a damp tea bag (tannins help clotting) and contact Fusion.
- Ice - Apply ice packs externally, 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. Start immediately after surgery.
- Medications - Take prescribed antibiotics as directed (complete the full course). Take pain medication before anesthesia wears off.
- Diet - Cool, soft foods only. No hot foods or beverages. No straws.
- Rest - Rest with your head elevated. No exercise, bending, or heavy lifting.
- Oral hygiene - Do not brush the surgical area. Do not rinse vigorously. Avoid spitting.
Days 2-7
- Ice/Heat - Continue ice packs through day 2. After 48 hours, switch to warm moist heat if desired.
- Salt water rinses - Starting on day 2, gently rinse with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8 oz water) 4-6 times per day, especially after meals.
- Brushing - Resume gentle brushing of teeth (not the surgical area) after 24-48 hours. Use a soft-bristled brush. Avoid the implant site directly.
- Diet - Gradually introduce warmer soft foods. Continue avoiding hard, crunchy, and chewy foods.
- Activity - Light activities are fine after day 2-3. Avoid strenuous exercise for 5-7 days.
- Smoking - Do not smoke. Smoking is the #1 controllable risk factor for implant failure.
Weeks 2-4
- Oral hygiene - Resume normal brushing and flossing around the implant area. Your Fusion team may prescribe a special brush or irrigator for cleaning around implant components.
- Diet - Expand to most foods. Continue avoiding very hard items (nuts, hard candy) directly over the implant site.
- Follow-up - Attend your scheduled follow-up appointment. Your surgeon checks healing progress.
- Activity - Normal exercise can resume. Avoid contact sports for 4-6 weeks.
Long-Term Care
Once your implants are fully healed and your permanent prosthesis is placed, maintain them with:
- Daily brushing - Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled electric or manual toothbrush.
- Flossing or water flosser - Clean under and around the prosthesis daily. Water flossers (Waterpik) are excellent for implant maintenance.
- Regular dental check-ups - Visit your dentist every 6 months for professional cleaning and implant examination.
- Avoid tobacco - Smoking remains a risk factor for late implant failure even after osseointegration.
- Night guard - If you grind or clench your teeth, a night guard protects your investment.
